Alternative Fuel Vehicles

For over 20 years, BKi has been a key part of the movement to put new, alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) on the road. We help assess the impacts and benefits of these vehicles and develop strategies for promoting their market adoption.

For example, we've led studies of fuel cell and natural gas vehicle commercialization needs for automakers, fuel producers, and state and federal agencies, helped the California Energy Commission evaluate AFV infrastructure statewide, managed two nationwide electric vehicle demonstrations for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and helped Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) introduce heavy- and light-duty liquefied and compressed natural gas vehicles.

Typical projects include:

Alternative Fuel Vehicle Research

  • CALFUELS infrastructure report  a planning document for the California Energy Commission

  • Comparative assessment of alternative fuel vehicle technologies

  • Clean-air vehicle regional demonstration program, bringing these new vehicles to the marketplace

Natural Gas Vehicles

  • NGV research roadmap to determine public interest research priorities

  • Natural gas quality studies as they pertain to NGVs

  • Utility NGV performance monitoring and evaluation program

  • CNG infrastructure specifications for airports and transit agencies

  • LNG infrastructure siting strategies

  • Economic assessment of NGV refueling station options for a municipal transit agency

  • Economic analysis of LNG as a heavy-duty vehicle fuel

  • Natural gas infrastructure performance monitoring
  • LNG market evaluations for heavy-duty fleets

Fuel Cell and Battery Electric Vehicles

  • Roadmapping study of barriers to commercialization for fuel cell vehicles using direct hydrogen, methanol, ethanol, and gasoline

  • Safety assessment and contingency response planning for major fuel cell vehicle research, operations, and refueling facility

  • Program administration contractor for California Fuel Cell Partnership

  • Assessment of electric vehicle technology and emissions  in-depth investigations for the California Air Resources Board and EPRI

  • Guidelines for establishing EV charging infrastructure at fleet facilities

  • In-depth investigations of commercial fleet manager attitudes
